Michigan Center for Civic Education Names New Board Members

The Michigan Center for Civic Education is pleased to announce the appointment of five new Board Members.

“We at MCCE are excited about expanding our services to educate and engage more students to be effective citizens through civic and law-related education” said Linda Start, Executive Director of the Michigan Center for Civic Education. “This addition completes a key task that our Board laid out as we embark on a new path forward”.

MCCE thanks the Michigan State Bar Foundation for providing funding to develop a new roadmap which will enable MCCE to expand outreach and services.

The new members of the MCCE Board of Directors include:

M.J. STEPHEN FOX

Steve Fox is the founder of Fox & Associates, a Grand Rapids area law firm. Fox attended Western Michigan University, serving as Vice-President of Student Affairs and subsequently President of the Student Body. Fox was admitted to the Thomas M. Cooley law school where he served as President of the Student Body, and received the Alumni Distinguished Student Award upon graduation. Fox was actively involved in Cooley’s Moot Court and Client Counseling programs, receiving numerous regional and national awards. He has presented lectures and papers before a wide variety of organizations and audiences throughout the United States. Fox is a Fellow of Michigan’s State Bar Foundation. He serves as Secretary of the State Bar’s Litigation Section, and is scheduled to become Chair in October, 2013. Fox was recently appointed Adjunct Professor at Cooley’s Grand Rapids campus, effective September, 2012.

DAVID HALES

David Hales is the Social Studies Consultant for the Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency. A former teacher, he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Michigan State University. He is a past president of the Michigan Council for the Social Studies and has been active in the National Council for the Social Studies. He is a Board member of the Michigan Council for History Education and is the chair of the Michigan Social Studies Supervisors’ Association. In 2008 Mr. Hales was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm to serve on the Michigan Commission for the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 where he co-leads its educational outreach.

MEGAN V. MCCAUSLAND Megan McCausland is Director of Community Relations for Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, Benton Harbor where she is responsible for developing marketing, public relations and communications strategies including web and social media. A former teacher, McCausland earned a BA from Hope College and a MA from Georgetown University. She served as program manager for the Center for Civic Education, monitoring the use of over half a million dollars in federal funds at eighteen School Violence Prevention Demonstration sites.

MONICA R. NUCKOLLS

Monica R. Nuckolls is an Associate Professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Auburn Hills Campus. Before joining the Cooley faculty, Professor Nuckolls served as a commercial litigation associate at the law firm of Clark Hill, PLC in Detroit, Michigan. Nuckolls currently serves as the chair of the State Bar of Michigan’s Law Related Education Subcommittee. She is a member of the Oakland County Bar Association’s Law Related Education Committee and is an Oakland County Bar Foundation Fellow. She has co-authored several books aimed toward teaching young people about the law and promoting responsible citizenship. In addition, she helped create an anti-bullying program geared toward teaching young people about the legal, social, and psychological effects of this type of destructive behavior.

PAUL ZAVALA

Paul Zavala is a member of the General Motors Legal Staff headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. He practices environmental and energy law. Zavala attended Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan Law School. Zavala is very active in a number of civic and business associations and serves on various corporate advisory boards. He is a volunteer teacher in the Detroit Public School System’s Street Law Program and is a founding member of the Juan Luis Tienda Scholarship at the University of Michigan Law School. He serves on the advisory board of New Futuro whose mission is to increase the number of Hispanic college graduates. In 2008, Paul was awarded the prestigious “Lucero Award” from Latino Justice/PRLDEF. This award is granted to a “guiding star” in the legal community who exemplifies PRLDEF’s mission to help Latinos achieve their dreams. He currently serves as Vice President of the Hispanic National Bar Foundation.

The five new members join the current MCCE board that includes Interim President Ron Lowe, Judge, 35th District Court; Treasurer, Bill Trevarthen, retired Executive Director, Michigan Government Television; Secretary, Margaret Krasnoff, Attorney; and members; Don Fulkerson, Attorney, Law Offices of Don Fulkerson; Hoon-Yung Hopgood, State Senator; Lynn Richardson, Commissioner, Michigan Supreme Court; and Janet Welch, Executive Director, State Bar of Michigan.
