Regional Meetings focus on State Level Policy Making to Improve Civic Learning and Engagement
he Michigan Center for Civic Education was invited to participant in Every Student a Citizen Western Regional Meeting at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center on June 28, 2012. MCCE was represented by Linda Start, Executive Director. Also attending was Kathleen Straus, Michigan State Board of Education.
Every Student a Citizen is a two-year effort of the National Center for Learning and Citizenship (NCLC) and the Education Commission of the States (ECS) to foster the development of state-level policy agendas for civic learning and civic engagement in P-12 schools. Recognizing the critical nature of the civic mission of schools and the opportunities afforded by growing interest in this civic mission, regional meetings were convened in June to be followed in 2013 by a National Summit on the Role of State Policy in Promoting Civic Knowledge and Civic Engagement in K-12 Schools.
State teams attending the Regional Meeting were charged with identifying and developing:
1.Appropriate goals and measures for the civic outcomes of schools
2.Potential state policy agendas to address the civic knowledge and civic engagement crisis in PreK-12 schools
3.Mechanisms and practices that will lead to scaling-up and building upon the existing best civic learning practices of PreK-12 schools. More information on Every Student a Citizen is available here.
