Michigan Joint Social Studies Conference 2014

MCCE is partnering with the Michigan Council for the Social Studies, Michigan Council on Economic Education, and the Michigan Geographic Alliance to present the Joint Social Studies Conference. Each of the content organizations is responsible for organizing a strand of the conference

The 2014 Joint Social Studies Conference will provide:

A great opportunity for teachers to learn about best practice
New materials and lessons
Sessions for elementary, middle school and high school teachers
Current educational research
A chance to talk with social studies teachers from around the state

Conference Highlights:

Keynote on Thursday, November 6: Superintendent Flanagan, Michigan Department of Education
Panel Discussion on Friday, November 7: The Detroit Bankruptcy
Moderated by Nathan Bomey of the Detroit Free Press, panelists include Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan, Sonya Mays, (special advisor to emergency manager Kevyn Orr) and Brad Williams, Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Roundtable Discussions for teachers to make recommendations for revisions of the Michigan Social Studies content expectations. (The Michigan Department of Education is embarking on a one year project to review Michigan Social Studies Grade Level Content Expectations through the lens of the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies.The intent is to edit and clarify the existing standards as a basis for revised social studies assessment. The Roundtable discussions will give input to this project.)

First held in 1982, Educating for Citizenship is a conference for educators and community members that highlights best practices in law-related and civic education in Michigan and nationally.

Features exemplary materials and strategies for teaching law and citizenship in elementary, middle, and high schools tied to the Michigan Civics Standards and Grade Level Content Expectations;
Showcases programs which actively involve legal professionals, community groups and public officials in school-based programs;
Highlights current legal and public policy issues in Michigan and the nation;

Civic Education Teacher of the Year Award

An important feature of Educating for Citizenship is the recognition of Teachers and Community Members for their achievements in law-related civic education. The Law-Related Civic Education Teacher of the Year Award is awarded annually along with the Mary S. Coleman Award.

The Mary S. Coleman Award

MCCE also recognizes members of the community for their support of and involvement in civic education efforts in Michigan. The Mary S. Coleman Award is presented in honor of former Chief Justice Mary S. Coleman, who was instrumental in the establishment of MCCE in 1982.
